Native American Studies is one of the most exciting, dynamic, and inquiring fields of study in America today. This Odyssey course introduces students to the contemporary political history of Indigenous peoples in the American South through multiple viewpoints including Native American and European perspectives.
Exploring key themes, the course leads students into understanding geographic locations and languages of Southeastern Indigenous peoples today. It explores pivotal contemporary events such as the winning of the Creek Land Claims Case of 1972, the Federal Recognition of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in 1984, and the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case of Carcieri v. Salazar in 2009.
It also looks at contemporary cultural practices of the Pvsketv (Green Corn ceremony) and demonstrates how they have survived despite colonization for hundreds of years, and explores Native American literature on Southeastern Indigenous peoples.
Develop a depth of knowledge, through exposure to primary sources, class exercises, lectures, class discussions, and published writings. These key themes will further expand your overall understanding of Native Americans in the Southeast and explore how they fit into the framework of American history.
