Spring is finally here and after a long winter, it is exciting to see buds, green leaves, and flowering plants everywhere. This is inspiration to get outdoors and plant! Join us for Master Gardening, where Dr. Judy Stout and Alice Marty will present on a variety of topics including vegetable gardening, landscaping with native plants, the birds and bees, and others! This is a popular course where you can learn the science, techniques and tips to make your garden a masterpiece.

Alice Marty

Alice Marty or "Grandma Nature" as her grandchildren's friends call her is a transplanted Midwesterner who loves living and gardening in the deep south. Alice's DNA is packed with farmers as far as the eye can see making her a natural for the Alabama Master Gardener program. Since joining the Mobile County Master Gardeners in 2007 she has shared her knowledge of butterflies and plan propagation with garden clubs either in person or through Lagniappe's 'Ask a Master Gardener' column.

Judy Stout

Dr. Judy Stout holds BS, MS and PhD degrees in Biology, Marine Sciences and Secondary Education from the University of Alabama. She served at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab from 1972 to 1998 as a Senior Marine Scientist; Assistant Director for Facilities and Associate Director for Academic Programs and Graduate Studies. During this time she prepared the first comprehensive maps of coastal Alabama wetlands and submerged grassbeds and performed early ecological and restoration studies of plant communities in both habitats. She chaired the first Mobile Bay NEP Habitat Committee and assisted in preparation of the first NEP Comprehensive Coastal Management Plan. She retired from the University of South Alabama in 2005 where she was the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the Graduate School and Founding Director of the University Honors Program. In her retirement she was appointed and elected to seven and a half years on the Mobile County School Board. She is an active volunteer with the Mobile Botanical Gardens, the Mobile County Master Gardeners and in an advisory capacity to the Alabama Coastal Foundation, the Mobile Bay NEP, Fowl River Watershed Management, Penelope House Women's Shelter, The Mobile office of the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service and other boards and organizations. She continues to provide informal lectures and comments on local and regional environmental issues.
