After separating themselves from Spain during the Thirty Years' War, the Dutch began with a period of economic development with the Dutch East India Company. This meant a lot of money at home for elegant clothing, beautiful houses, and some of the most wonderful paintings found anywhere in the history of art. These paintings were either civic or more likely, domestic, due to very plain Protestant churches. Artists like Hals, Vermeer and Rembrandt were able to create wonderful paintings filled with religious themes but well-hidden in a world of beauty. Join the Odyssey group as they travel through the Protestant Baroque era via the vivid art of that time.
